This Airwallex review is for professionals comparing business finance apps: is Airwallex a good fit if your company collects, holds, converts and spends money in more than one currency? For businesses with regular cross-border payments, its free Explore plan, multi-currency accounts and published FX markup make it worth shortlisting. For a business that only operates in one currency, a local bank account plus a card is usually simpler.

Airwallex bundles business accounts, transfers, corporate cards, expense management, bill pay, payment acceptance and invoicing. That is a lot of overlap with tools you may already pay for, so the real question is which pieces replace something and which just add another login. Below we cover the US plans and fees as of November 2026, what the regulation actually says, how data flows to your accounting software, the risks, and a two-week test.

How we reviewed: based on Airwallex's official US pricing page (plans, fee table, footnotes and regulatory disclosures), checked November 7, 2026. We have not opened or funded an Airwallex account. Fees, features and availability differ by country; Airwallex runs separate regional sites, so check the pricing page for your region before deciding.

Airwallex review: the quick verdict

Airwallex is a financial platform for businesses that deal in several currencies. On the US site, the free Explore plan includes accounts to collect and hold funds in 20+ currencies, transfers to 120+ countries, corporate cards, expense and bill management, online payment acceptance and invoicing. Paid tiers mainly add spend controls and approvals for larger teams.

  • Good fit: e-commerce sellers paid by overseas marketplaces, agencies and SaaS companies billing foreign clients, and companies paying overseas suppliers or contractors.
  • Weak fit: single-currency businesses, companies that need branch banking or cash handling, and anyone who needs a product Airwallex does not offer in their country.

Because availability and pricing vary by region, treat the numbers below as the US offer and confirm your own country’s page.

What Airwallex does

Global accounts and wallet

You can open multiple accounts per entity and collect and hold funds in 20+ currencies, with multi-currency wallet management, direct debit in and out, and low balance alerts. For a business paid in euros and pounds, that can mean receiving funds locally rather than having every payment converted on arrival.

Transfers and FX

Airwallex lists fast local transfers to 120+ countries, SWIFT transfers to 200+ countries, multi-layer approval flows, FX rate alerts and automated FX and transfers via API.

Corporate cards and expenses

Explore includes unlimited multi-currency corporate cards, card controls to limit spend and freeze or cancel cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay support, a credit line for corporate cards, expense management with automated receipt data extraction, a mobile app for submitting and approving expenses, and reimbursements to employees in 200+ countries.

Bills, payments and invoicing

There is domestic and international bill pay with AI coding, batched bill payments, online card and local payment method acceptance (160+ local methods), payment links, e-commerce plugins and invoicing, plus subscription billing and usage-based billing.

Accounting and integrations

Explore syncs bank feeds, expenses and bills with Xero and QuickBooks. Grow adds NetSuite and Dynamics 365 Business Central sync, HRIS integrations and single sign-on.

Airwallex pricing and fees (US, November 2026)

From Airwallex’s US pricing page. Monthly prices are in USD. The page notes that terms and additional fees and charges may apply.

Plans

Plan Monthly fee Who it is for Notable additions
Explore $0 per user/month; up to 10 free Spend users Businesses managing funds and finances globally Accounts, transfers, cards, expenses, bill pay, payments, invoicing, Xero/QuickBooks sync
Grow $12 per user/month plus a platform fee based on team size; up to 250 Spend users Growing teams needing spend controls Purchase orders, multi-conditional approvals, AI expense policy agent, NetSuite and Dynamics 365 sync, SSO
Accelerate Custom Large businesses 3-way matching, ERP spend API, multiple legal entities, dedicated account manager

Two definitions matter. The monthly fee is charged per business legal entity, not per account. A “user” is any Spend user who is an active cardholder, or who submits, approves or pays a card expense, reimbursement or bill in the billing period. Someone who never touches spend is not counted.

Transaction fees

Fee US price
FX conversion 0.5% above interbank rates for major currencies; 1% for all other currencies
Domestic transfers in USD and CAD Free
SWIFT transfers to 200+ countries $15–$25 per transfer (SHA and OUR)
Card acceptance, domestic cards 2.8% + $0.30
Card acceptance, international cards 4.30% + $0.30
Local payment methods $0.30 plus payment method fee

How to avoid paying more than you need

  • Use local rails over SWIFT where available. SWIFT carries a $15–$25 fee per transfer; local transfers are listed separately and are usually the cheaper route when the destination is supported.
  • Hold currencies you will spend again. If you receive euros and later pay euro suppliers, keeping them in a euro balance avoids two conversions at 0.5% each.
  • Stay on Explore until approvals hurt. Grow’s value is controls for many spenders. With fewer than 10 Spend users and simple approvals, Explore may be enough.
  • Price card acceptance carefully. If you already accept payments through another processor, compare the 2.8% + $0.30 domestic rate with what you pay now before moving checkout.

Is Airwallex a bank? Is it safe?

Read the regulatory footer for your country, because the answer differs by region. On the US site, Airwallex states that Airwallex US, LLC (NMLS #1928093) is licensed or authorized to do business as a money transmitter in the states it lists, and that for some US customers it partners with Lead Bank and Evolve Bank & Trust (both Member FDIC) to provide payment services. The Airwallex Borderless Card is issued by Community Federal Savings Bank, Member FDIC. So in the US, Airwallex presents itself as a licensed money transmitter working with partner banks, not as a bank itself.

On security, the page says Airwallex meets PCI DSS, SOC 1 and SOC 2 compliance and that customer funds are safeguarded in line with local regulations where it operates.

One area to read closely is Yield, the option to earn a return on USD balances. The page explains that returns come from investments in AAA-rated money market funds, that an investment in the fund is not a bank account and is not insured or guaranteed by the FDIC, and that you could lose money. Yield rates are shown per plan and can change; treat Yield as an investment decision, not a savings account.

Airwallex vs Wise and other alternatives

People most often compare Airwallex with Wise, Stripe, Revolut Business and Payoneer. We have not verified those providers’ current fees for this article, so here is how to compare rather than a price table:

Question Why it matters Where Airwallex stands (US)
FX markup on your main currency pairs The biggest cost for most cross-border businesses 0.5% above interbank for major currencies, 1% for others
Monthly fee for your team size Fixed cost regardless of volume $0 on Explore for up to 10 Spend users
Payout fee to your top destinations Local vs SWIFT can differ a lot Local to 120+ countries; SWIFT $15–$25
Accounting sync Saves bookkeeping hours Xero and QuickBooks on Explore; NetSuite on Grow
Spend controls and approvals Matters once several people spend Basic on Explore; multi-conditional on Grow

Do the comparison with your own last three months of transactions: list each conversion and payout, then price them on each provider’s current pricing page. Our buyer’s checklist for software selection has a template you can adapt. If your main need is paying overseas staff rather than suppliers, compare against an employer-of-record or contractor tool too; see our Deel review.

Limits and risks

  • Country availability varies. Products, licenses and fees differ by region. A feature on the US page may not exist, or may cost differently, where your company is registered.
  • Onboarding checks take time. As a regulated payments business, Airwallex has to verify the business and its owners before accounts are opened. Plan for document requests and do not switch payroll or supplier payments on a fixed deadline.
  • Per-entity fees add up. Monthly fees are per legal entity, and Accelerate’s multi-entity management lists up to 3 entities included with possible fees for more.
  • Payment acceptance costs are percentage-based. International cards at 4.30% + $0.30 are costly on large tickets; compare with your current processor.
  • Concentration risk. Putting accounts, cards, bill pay and checkout with one provider simplifies operations but also means one outage or account review affects everything. Keep a backup account for critical payments.
  • Data exit. Before committing, confirm you can export statements and transaction history in a format your accountant accepts. Our data checks guide lists questions to ask.

A two-week Airwallex test plan

  1. Before you apply: pull three months of foreign-currency receipts, conversions and payouts from your current bank. Note fees and the rate you got.
  2. Days 1–4: apply on Explore. Complete business verification. Note how long it takes and what documents are requested.
  3. Days 5–6: connect accounting. Link Xero or QuickBooks and check that test transactions land in the right accounts.
  4. Days 7–10: run small real flows. Receive one foreign-currency payment, convert a small amount, make one local payout and one SWIFT payout if you use it. Record each fee.
  5. Days 11–12: issue two cards. Set spend limits, make a small purchase, submit and approve the expense with a receipt.
  6. Days 13–14: compare. Price your three-month history with Airwallex’s fees versus what you paid. Decide which pieces (accounts, cards, bill pay, checkout) actually replace something.

Final verdict

Airwallex is a strong candidate for businesses that regularly receive, convert and pay out in several currencies, with a free Explore plan in the US, a published FX markup of 0.5% above interbank for major currencies, and Xero and QuickBooks sync at no monthly fee. Move to Grow only when approvals and spend controls for many people justify $12 per user per month plus a platform fee. Check your country’s pricing and regulatory pages, keep a backup account, and treat Yield as an investment with risk.

Verdict

Airwallex is worth shortlisting for cross-border businesses: the US Explore plan is free for up to 10 Spend users and FX is 0.5% above interbank for major currencies. Confirm your region’s fees and availability, and compare against your own transaction history before switching.

Best for

  • Businesses receiving or paying in multiple currencies
  • E-commerce sellers and agencies with overseas clients or suppliers
  • Small teams wanting cards, expenses and FX in one app with Xero or QuickBooks sync

Look elsewhere if

  • Single-currency businesses with simple banking needs
  • Companies needing branch or cash services
  • Businesses in countries where the needed products are not offered
